“Faith in Financial Hardships: A Single Mom’s Journey to Stability”
Financial challenges are inevitable, especially when you’re pursuing big goals. As a single mom, I’ve faced more than my share of setbacks, but those seasons have also been opportunities to see God’s faithfulness in action. One of the most profound experiences of this was the journey to homeownership—a journey filled with loss, unexpected turns, and ultimately, God’s grace. As Scripture reminds us, “And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him” (Romans 8:28).
Acknowledge & Assess: Facing Financial Setbacks Head-On In 2003, I found what I thought would be the perfect home. I invested thousands of dollars into inspections and the initial steps of the homebuying process, but it turned out to be a bad deal. I lost that money, and with it, my confidence. Financial loss has a way of shaking you, and it’s easy to feel stuck in a place of disappointment. I had to acknowledge my hurt and frustration, but I couldn’t stay there. It was a pivotal moment to assess not just my financial situation but also my faith. What was God teaching me? How could I trust Him in the face of loss? As Proverbs 3:5-6 teaches us, “Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to Him, and He will make your paths straight.”
Turn Inward & Turn Upward: Surrendering to God’s Plan It was during this time that God began to redirect my steps. Through my church, I connected with a realtor who introduced me to a new home in another county. The home was everything I had hoped for, but there was a catch—it already had two contracts on it. I didn’t see how it could work, but my realtor had faith. She encouraged me to move forward and submit my contract anyway. I hesitated but eventually surrendered the situation to God. In a moment of faith, I submitted the offer, and to my surprise, it was accepted. Looking back, I see God’s hand all over that moment. It was a reminder that His plans are not limited by human circumstances. When I prayed over that home, declaring it as God’s house, I felt a deep sense of peace. As Philippians 4:19 promises, “And my God will meet all your needs according to the riches of His glory in Christ Jesus.”
Own Your Story: Navigating the Highs and Lows of Homeownership Owning a home as a single mom hasn’t been without its challenges. There were times when I came close to foreclosure, moments of financial strain where I thought I might lose everything. But every time, God made a way. One of the most powerful lessons I’ve learned is that it’s okay to grieve financial setbacks or feel the weight of stress. Those emotions are natural, but they can’t define your response. Owning my story meant leaning into those hard moments while still holding onto hope. It also meant learning to listen for God’s voice, especially in times of uncertainty. I’ve found that when I quiet my mind and surrender my worries to Him, He speaks clearly. His guidance has always come through, whether it’s an idea, a resource, or the strength to persevere. As Isaiah 41:10 reminds us, “So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God.“
Move Forward: Building Stability for Your Family Through the ups and downs of homeownership, I’ve seen God’s faithfulness in every step. Providing a stable home for my son was one of my biggest prayers as a single mom, and I’m thankful that God has answered that prayer over and over. Stability is very important for children. It gives them a sense of security and a foundation to grow. For my son, having a consistent home environment was a gift, even during the hardest financial times. To the younger moms reading this, I want to encourage you: don’t let financial challenges discourage you. God’s faithfulness isn’t tied to your bank account or your current circumstances. He is your provider and sustainer. “Cast your cares on the LORD and He will sustain you” (Psalm 55:22).
